HAVANA CITY

Havana was first founded in 1515, south of its present position, by the Spaniard, Diego Velazquez .It was resited to its present location in 1519 to take advantage of the excellent harbour with its narrow and easily defended entrance. Around the city- now the part called Habana Vieja, the Spaniards built a fortified wall whose remnants can still be seen. There have been many battles here between Spain and her enemies and also with pirates.
The city centre is divided into three – Old Havana , Central Havana and New Havana or as it is known – Verdado and all three sections adjoin the oceanfront. The Malecon is the sweeping esplanade along the oceanfront from Habana Vieja to Verdado. As well as being a major thoroughfare, it’s wide footpath and rock wall down to the ocean, makes it’s a meeting place for Cubans to talk, sing, dance, fish and swim.
Presently the population is 2 189 716. Havana is a dynamic and active city She is old and in need of attention in places, but she is very much alive and very loved. She never sleeps, only dozes and is always ready for a party. Here you can appreciate a great diversity of history, culture and religions.
Of course Havana is the country’s leading centre for government, education, medicine, tourism and trade, and has many of Cuba’s leading industries.
